Overview

The Vector Control Technician I is responsible for performing duties of vector control, prevention, and education of mosquito surveillance and abatement. This position will set mosquito traps within the city to collect and send mosquitoes to the State lab. The incumbent will be responsible for adulticide and larvicide in accordance with State law and coordinate with other departments to abate mosquito breeding areas. The schedule will include nights and be flexible depending on needs of the department and program.

Responsibilities

• Determines areas where mosquito traps need to be placed to monitor the population within the city

• Gathers samples from the mosquito traps and submitting them to the Department of the State Health and Services for further analysis

• Performs mosquito spraying with adulticide and larvicide

• Conducts spraying on a routine basis, when a high mosquito population is identified, and on a seasonal basis but can be done throughout the year as needed

• Coordinates with other city departments to abate high grass, standing water above and below ground (including in stormwater lines), and other contributors to mosquito breeding

• Performs larvicide in advance of mosquito season

• Conducts evaluations of last season's efforts and implements appropriate changes based on effusiveness of prior interventions

• Maintains knowledge of specific equipment unique to Vector Control

• Performs basic, as needed preventative maintenance on the vector equipment in proper working condition

• Keeps inventory and monitors equipment status

• Monitors and reports promptly any damage to equipment

• Ensures all equipment including fleet of vehicles is in working order in advance of mosquito season

• Documents mosquito surveillance records on paper and electronically, including adulticide and larvicide spraying efforts

• Maintains accurate records and documentation of chemicals for audit purposes and regulatory standards

• Reports to internal City Departments, the Texas Department of License and Regulations (TDLR), and Department of State Health Services (DSHS)

• Maintains accurate records of chemicals and actions concerning performance of Vector Control

• Services portable generators, small engines, off-road vehicles such as ATVs, and golf carts

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

• Non - Exempt - Full-Time - 40 hours a week

• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED

• One (1) year of experience

Certifications, Licenses or other requirements

Required

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

Required within six (6) months of hire

• Vector Applicator License

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
