Beginning on February 17, 2026 at 8 AM, the City of Livermore will accept applications for our 2026 Summer College Internship Program. Apply immediately! Applications will be accepted until we receive 150 applications.

The City of Livermore is looking for undergraduate and graduate college students and recent college graduates who are interested in gaining experience in a local city government department. Interested individuals need to submit an online application and identify the positions of interest with a brief explanation.

The program will run from June through August/September, depending on school schedules. Summer internships with the City will be temporary employment. Interns will earn $21.50 per hour without benefits. Depending on assignment, interns will work 20-29 hours per week. Eligibility for this program includes the possession of a high school diploma or GED. Current enrollment in college is not a requirement for these opportunities. Recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.

The City of Livermore is offering summer internship opportunities in the following Department/Divisions:

Administrative Services Department

This intern will work on special projects relating to Information Technology, Finance, and City-wide policies. This internship experience will include system implementations, data analysis, research, and project coordination.

This internship is best suited for students studying business administration, public administration, and/or information technology.

Airport Division

The Livermore Airport (LVK) is a General Aviation Reliever Airport which serves private, business and corporate tenants and customers. The intern will conduct data analysis on airport-related policies and procedures; and be involved with event coordination including the 4 th of July Airport event.

This internship is best suited for students studying business administration, communications, and other related fields.

Building Division

The Building Division provides plan review and field inspections of buildings to ensure a safe, accessible and energy efficient environment throughout our community. This Division regulates local and State laws related to building construction, maintenance, use, repair and rehabilitation. This includes enforcement of the City's Development Code and Municipal Code through our Neighborhood Preservation section, and state mandated energy conservation, disabled access, and housing laws. These objectives are accomplished through administration of public outreach and technical assistance programs, as well as building code regulation.

The Building Division also manages the City's Permit Center. The Permit Center coordinates and streamlines the development review and construction permit process. Applications for construction projects are submitted to the Permit Center, where the review process is coordinated among several departments and regulatory agencies. This provides the customer with a comprehensive single point of contact throughout the entire review and permit process.

This internship is best suited for those students studying construction management and obtaining experience in plan review which includes structural engineering.

City Manager’s Office

The City Manager's Office coordinates the operational activities of all City departments, implements City Council goals, and ensures public access to the City's legislative efforts and elections.

This internship will exercise program management skills by assisting at events such as the All-Employee Briefing, 150th anniversary, 4th of July, etc. There would also be opportunities to work with the City Clerk's office on City Council related items, and general office support.

This internship is best suited for students studying Public Administration, Business Administration, and/or Marketing.

Communications (City Manager’s Office)

The communications intern for the City Manager’s Office will help with the creation and production of messaging for the Livermore Community on behalf of the City of Livermore. The ideal individual for this internship will demonstrate high attention to detail, and good writing and design skills.

This internship is best suited for students studying communications, writing, and/or marketing.

Communications (Public Works)

The Public Works Department is comprised of two divisions: Maintenance and Water Resources. The department also manages the City’s Environmental Services and Asset Management programs. Public Works maintains the City’s streets, signs, traffic signals, streetlights and public landscaping. It is also responsible for maintaining City facilities and vehicle and equipment fleet. Public Works oversees the operation, maintenance, and periodic replacement of the City’s potable water system, sewer collection system, storm drain system, wastewater treatment, and recycled water system. The department also oversees and administers the franchise solid waste and recycling contract.

The communications intern for the Public Works Department will help in the creation and production of messaging for the department including using tools like Canva for designing and Asana for obtaining approvals, as well as working with printers and product makers to order approved marketing swag. The intern should be interested in words and marketing strategy, in accuracy and facts, have an eye for captivating images, and a desire to tell stories through a variety of mediums. Good writing, design skills, and willingness to take feedback and adaptability are desirable qualities for government communications. The intern should have a keen eye for evocative images, a joy in finding the words that inspire or educate, a willingness to finesse and adjust, a strong get-it-done attitude, and pride in keeping the community informed. While not required, an interest in analytics would be a plus. This intern should look forward to the opportunity to plan/design and obtain approvals for regulatory and project messaging and other strategic campaigns that require a willingness to tell a factual story entertainingly.

This internship is best suited for students studying communications, writing, marketing, and/or marketing analytics.

Engineering Division

The Engineering Division ensures that public infrastructure (transportation systems, storm drainage, water supply, sewage collection and treatment, public buildings, landscaped areas, golf courses and airport) meets community requirements. Engineering project tasks such as field review and investigation, cost estimating, permit review, assistance with Engineering reports, research, construction inspection, and various engineering calculations.

This internship is best suited for students pursuing a civil engineering degree.

Environmental Services

The Environmental Services Division (ESD) within the Public Works Department oversees the administration of the Solid Waste and Recycling Contract with Livermore Sanitation. In addition to managing this contract, we are dedicated to leading various Special Projects aimed at enhancing sustainability in the City of Livermore. As a vital arm of the Public Works Department, we collaborate with Livermore Sanitation and other City departments to efficiently implement and manage waste and recycling initiatives that support efforts to reduce and divert waste.

As an intern with ESD, you'll have the unique opportunity to engage in a diverse range of hands-on projects that directly contribute to the enhancement of City operations and processes in Livermore. Interns will play a crucial role in fostering sustainability in Livermore. A large portion of the internship will be assisting with outreach efforts, including updating our educational and promotional materials to align with new state recycling laws, specifically Senate Bill 54: Plastic Pollution Prevention Policy.

Interns will also have the chance to utilize their creative skills to help maintain a paper procurement tracking system, education City staff on sorting practices, assist in compost donations for local entities, table at farmers markets, and play a role in creating social media content or addressing common questions about recycling, composting, and garbage. Additionally, Interns will have the opportunity to participate in stakeholder meetings and networking events, providing invaluable exposure to various stakeholders within the community. Furthermore, interns will have the opportunity to tour recycling and composting facilities in the Bay Area and beyond, gaining insights into best practices and innovative technologies in waste management.

Additional Opportunities:
Beyond the projects, interns may also work on various special projects related to solid waste management, recycling, and sustainability initiatives not explicitly listed. Moreover, interns are encouraged to brainstorm and implement new ideas to enhance City operations and contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious community.

This internship is best suited for those studying environmental studies, communications, public policy, environmental law, and/or marketing.

Finance Division

The Finance Division plays a role for all departments in the City including processing employee paychecks, payments to vendors, purchasing, etc. all while complying with required State reporting, year-end financial reports as well as budgeting. The intern will assist with contract management analysis, purchasing card analysis, documenting procedures, and file management. Additionally, this internship experience can be customized to involved other areas of Finance.

This internship is best suited for a student studying Finance, Accounting, or Communications.

Housing and Human Services Division

The Housing and Human Services Division works to ensure that every resident, especially those who are low-income, homeless, seniors, or living with disabilities, has access to safe, affordable housing and vital support services. As part of our work, we collaborate with local organizations to provide resources for children and youth, families, seniors, and individuals with special needs. These programs help people thrive by connecting them to housing, health, and social services that improve quality of life.

This intern will assist with a variety of projects that support affordable housing and community service programs in Livermore. The work may include researching and analyzing data on housing and social service needs, preparing reports and presentations to track program outcomes, expanding outreach efforts that connect residents with essential resources, collaborating with nonprofit partners to support special projects. This assignment offers hands-on experience in public service, affordable housing policy, and nonprofit collaboration, making it ideal for students passionate about social impact and community development.

Human Resources Division

The Human Resources Division serves 8 municipal departments and a workforce of approximately 450 employees, and strives to create and enhance employment programs that attract and retain the most talented employees.

The intern will gain hands-on experience by supporting various HR programs. The internship will be tailored based on the intern’s request for specific HR program areas.

This internship is best suited for a student studying Business Administration and/or Human Resources Management.

Information Technology Division – Enterprise Applications

The Information Technology Division supports all City departments by managing enterprise applications, business systems, and digital workplace technologies. The team oversees core platforms including ERP systems, Microsoft 365, SharePoint Online, workflow automation tools, and document management systems. We work closely with departments such as Finance, HR, Public Works, and Community Development to improve operational efficiency, data integrity, cybersecurity, and user experience. Our division focuses on modernizing business processes, implementing automation solutions, and ensuring reliable, secure technology services across the organization.



This internship offers exposure to enterprise-level municipal systems, experience with Microsoft 365 administration, hands-on automation development, cross-department collaboration experience, and real-world government IT operations exposure. This internship is best suited for a student studying in the field of computer science or any IT related field.

Information Technology – Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

This intern will assist the GIS Program Manager with metadata, ArcGIS Online Standards and Procedures, triage and troubleshoot GIS tickets, understand process within City of Livermore. The ideal candidate will be able to gather requirements for new solutions and processes.

This internship is best suited for a student pursuing a BS or MA in Engineering, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, GIS, Economics, Geography, and Computer Science.

Information Technology (Library Department)

In the Library’s IT environment, the intern must possess basic Windows computer and networking skills. The intern will be expected to follow written instructions accurately and troubleshoot basic IT-related questions from staff. Additionally, they will assist in equipment deployment, cabling, and following instructions for basic configurations.

This internship is best suited for a student taking information technology courses.

Library Department

The intern selected for the Livermore Library Department will help with behind the scenes projects and learn the skills to work at a service desk in a public library. This internship is great for someone going into the Library field as this opportunity will include working with experienced librarians and other library staff. Examples of projects include outreach and program assistance.

This internship is best suited for students pursuing or holding any undergraduate degree to obtain a Master’s in Library and Information Science.

Planning Division

The Planning Division assists customers at the Permit Center with questions related to zoning, new development, and additions; review new development projects for conformance with City standards and present to the Planning Commission and City Council; and prepare and amend policy documents such as the Livermore General Plan and Development Code.

The internship will include learning to work with customers at the Permit Center to answer planning and zoning questions, analyzing small scale projects for conformance with City standards, and will be assigned to a mentor who will have them attend project meetings to learn about new development projects and conduct project research on policy development.

The internship is best suited for students pursuing a degree in urban planning or other related field.

Police Department – Public Information

Risk Management Division

The Risk Management Division of the City Attorney’s Office analyzes the City’s insurance and other risk exposure issues, manages liability and workers’ compensation claims, and coordinates the ADA Title II program. The Division also provides safety and loss prevention programs. The mission of the Risk Management Division is to:



This internship will provide the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments, including but not limited to, updating and developing safety and risk management policies and programs; assisting with the review of data, forms; compliance of policies and procedures; applying loss control problem solving by analyzing claims data to identify risk exposure and trends; learning how to process and evaluate liability claims filed against the City; gaining a general understanding of how insurance requirements are determined based on a proposed scope of work, and participating in various safety and loss control programs.

Water Resources Division – Safety Program

The City of Livermore Water Resources Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for the distribution of potable and recycled water, treating wastewater and stormwater, and maintaining the city's infrastructure for water and wastewater. The intern will provide analytical support to the Division's Safety Program. This includes assisting with budget reports and records management processes. Familiarity with Microsoft office application (SharePoint, Word, Excel) is desirable.
