Are you ready to make a real impact on how compensation is administered? In this pivotal role, you'll be a trusted advisor for all things classification and compensation. You’ll expertly navigate complex data, city policies, and employment laws to provide recommendations on compensation programs and issues to ensure pay is competitive. Not only will you help guide compensation, but this role also ensures classifications are appropriately assigned.
As a key player on our team, you’ll participate in major projects-from analyzing organizational structures and job descriptions to conducting high-level market surveys and financial impact costs. You won’t just report numbers; you’ll identify trends in turnover and other indicators, recommending innovative solutions and providing essential training to stakeholders across the City of Austin.
Job Description:Compensation ConsultantPurpose:Plan and design a broad range of human resources services and programs citywide in the area of Compensation and Classification.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Plans, designs, develops, implements, and evaluates major classification and compensation projects and programs.
- Develops compensation procedures and processes for the implementation of City or Department human resources policies or strategies.
- Provides advice and counsel to management and other employee groups on a broad range of classification and compensation issues and decisions.
- Identifies, analyzes, and recommends solutions for various compensation problems and monitors implementation of agreed upon actions until the problem has been resolved.
- Analyzes organizational structures and jobs to establish job descriptions, classifications, placements, and market matches for pay comparison purposes.
- Analyzes complex compensation data to assure equitable pay practices and makes recommendations for adjustments.
- Coordinates the conducting and analysis of both formal and informal compensation surveys.
- Coordinates the development of cost estimates of the financial impact of compensation programs and actions.
- Provides advice and recommendations to management in order to make sound classification and compensation related decisions.
- Analyzes morale indicators and other personnel measurements such as but not limited to surveys, turnover, and grievances, and presents recommendations for new or revised compensation programs.
- Provides training to various stakeholders including employees, supervisors, managers and the human resources community on compensation topics and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a related field, plus four (4) years of related experience.
- Experience may substitute for education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience in developing and fostering strong working relationships with client groups.
- Experience leading job analyses, market reviews, and conducting cost projections analyses.
- Experience designing and reviewing alternative pay programs.
- Experience conducting training on Compensation or Human Resources-related topics.
- Advanced experience in Excel and Access.
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) or related Human Resources certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

You’ll collaborate with leaders and HR partners across the City to analyze compensation data, interpret policies and employment laws, and provide clear, actionable recommendations. From conducting market studies and job analyses to evaluating organizational structures and developing compensation processes, your work will directly impact how the City attracts and retains top talent.
As a key contributor, you’ll support major projects, identify trends in turnover and workforce indicators, and recommend innovative solutions that strengthen the City’s compensation programs. You’ll also deliver training to employees, supervisors, managers, and HR professionals, empowering stakeholders to understand and apply compensation principles effectively.

Salary Range:$71,630 - $90,980 depending on qualifications and experience.
Office Location:One Texas Center, 505 Barton Spring Road, Ste. 600, Austin, Texas 78704
Days and Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Hours may vary based on operational needs.
Alternative schedules and remote work options are available; however, the position requires at least 40% in-office each week. A flexible hybrid schedule may be offered after successful completion of the probationary period.
Driving Requirement:If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
