Essential Job Functions

Processes a variety of law enforcement reports to align with a request/order and to distribute to different units.

Types and files a variety of documents by matching documents to the appropriate identifiers; inputting the appropriate court information; distributing reports to appropriate units.

Indexes and/or scans reports into appropriate computerized law enforcement data systems.

Checks computer entries, documents, etc. by logging into appropriate software; matching documents to the appropriate identifiers; proof reading documents.

Enters and retrieves confidential law enforcement information align with a request/order in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Researches and compiles information on persons or property named in reports such as arrest and driver's records, wants or outstanding warrants, stolen or recovered property, to comply with a request/order in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Maintains confidential criminal records and files to align with departmental policies and procedures.

Screens and routes telephone calls.

Furnishes information to the public and authorized law enforcement personnel in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures regarding release of confidential and non-confidential information.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY

OPTION A: One year of experience at the level of* County of Los Angeles class of Intermediate Clerk ** or Intermediate Typist-Clerk ** performing specialized clerical functions or assisting higher-level clerical staff performing clerical functions in the Records and Identification Bureau of the Sheriff's Department.

OPTION B: Two years of specialized office clerical experience at the level* of County of Los Angeles class of Intermediate Clerk ** or Intermediate Typist-Clerk .**

OPTION C: Three years of office clerical experience.

TYPEWRITING SKILL
Ability to type at the rate of 30 net words per minute (NWPM).

LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS
Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONAIRE
As part of this application process, applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. The questionnaire contains a pre-investigative questionnaire which will be applied as part of the background investigation process to ensure applicants meet the standards set forth by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Applicants who fail the pre-investigative questionnaire will be disqualified and will have to wait three (3) months from the date of the disqualification in order to reapply.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
The examination will consist of two (2) parts:

PART I
The examination will consist of an online multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), weighted 100%, assessing:


APPLICANTS WHO RECEIVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON PART I WILL BE INVITED TO PART II.

PART II
A qualifying online typing assessment of 30 NWPM will be required for candidates who have NOT held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles. Applicants do not need to appear at a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department exam facility to participate in this assessment. Applicants may complete the online assessment on a personal device during a specified examination period.

This exam (Records System Clerk I) requires a typing proficiency of 30 NWPM. You will be allowed one (1) attempt to pass the typing performance test. You may not need to take a typing test if you meet any of the following:
Candidates who have not taken the typing performance test or met the typing requirement, as mentioned above, will be provided with a link to the Los Angeles County typing performance test during the examination process.

THE MULTIPLE CHOICE ASSESSMENTS AND PERFORMANCE TYPING TEST ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY APPLICANTS PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS, INCLUDING THE TYPING REQUIREMENTS, AND ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

TRANSFER OF TEST COMPONENTS
If you have taken identical components recently for other exams, your responses may be automatically transferred to this examination. This exam contains test components that might be used on future exams, and your responses could be transferred to that exam.

TESTING ACCOMMODATION
If you require an accommodation to fairly compete in any part of the examination process, you will be required to submit documentation from a qualified medical provider or other qualified professional to support your request for a testing accommodation. Please note, you will be contacted at a later time by a Sheriff’s Department representative that will guide you through the process. You will be provided with an initial deadline to submit documentation. Failure to submit the required documentation by the deadline will delay your participation in the examination process and consideration for initial placement on the eligible register.

TEST PREPARATION
The Department of Human Resources (DHR) provides study guides and other test preparation resources to help applicants prepare for employment tests. While the guides may help in preparing for the test, we recommend reviewing all related materials that seem necessary.

VETERAN'S CREDIT
If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for veteran's credit, which is an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. We will need a copy of your form DD214 to review, so please include that with your application or email it to [email protected] within seven (7) calendar days from the date of filing your online application.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION
Applicants who passed the assessments are placed on the list in the order of their score group for a period of six (6) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies within the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Technology and Support Division, Records and Identification Bureau as they occur.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY SIX (6) MONTHS.

SPECIAL INFORMATION
SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE A THOROUGH BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, INCLUDING FINGERPRINT SEARCH. Examples of disqualifying factors include: Any felony convictions; job related misdemeanor convictions; certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year; failure to appear; at fault accidents; suspended license; driving under the influence); poor credit history; poor employment history; substance abuse; anyone on probation.
