Position: Law Clerk to Judge Jeffrey Bates

Job location: Offices of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, in Springfield, Missouri

Start date: August 2026

Application deadline: Initial review of applications will begin February 17, 2026; the position will remain open until filled

Duties and responsibilities:

• Review briefs, motions, and other case filings
• Conduct thorough and comprehensive legal research on a wide range of topics
• Prepare written memos
• Draft, proofread, and cite-check judicial opinions
• Attend oral arguments
• Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirementsby the start date:

• Hold a Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
• Be a member of The Missouri Bar or be eligible to sit for the Missouri bar examination

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Exceptional legal research, writing, and critical reasoning skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
• Proficiency with legal research and word processing technologies, including Westlaw and Microsoft Word

Salary and benefits: The anticipated starting salary is $60,000 per year. This position is eligible for certain state benefits, including health insurance, life insurance, deferred compensation plan, and retirement plan (after applicable vesting period).
