This position is with the Soil and Water Conservation Program (SWCP) and will be located at the Lewis and Clark State Office, 1101 Riverside Dr, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101. Extensive day trip travel and infrequent overnight stays required.

• Review the impact of planned conservation practices upon cultural resources.
• Conduct Phase I archaeological surveys to section 106 standards and MoSHPO guidelines.
• Complete or co-author Phase I reports for submission to the MoSHPO.
• Ensure state and federal cost-share projects meet NHPA and Section 106 compliance.
• Provide training to soil and water conservation district employees and supervisors and partner field planning staff on a variety of topics including 106 compliance, cultural resources survey, and anthropological/archaeology ethical and legal standards.
• Develop a general understanding of the rules, regulations, and policies that affect soil and water conservation in Missouri.
• Represent the program at a variety of meetings, trainings, and educational events.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

• Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology or closely related field. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)

Ideal applicants would possess the following skills and experience:

• Willingness to learn and comply with MoSHPO archaeological survey guidelines.
• Willingness to learn and comply with the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 106 standards for archaeological survey.
• Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions and to navigate altering terrain, including undulating hills and streambanks.
• Ability to work extended hours in the field conducting pedestrian survey and shovel testing.
• Experience working with an archaeological crew as a technician, requiring the following:
• Use of a compass
• Pacing out standard 15 meter and 30 meter transects
• Use of an archaeological screen
• Identifying prehistoric and historic cultural materials
• Logging of data
• Mapping and delineating archaeological sites
• Willingness to learn and implement the use of technology in cultural resources review, including:
• ArcGIS
• Fieldmaps
• Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid operator’s license

Salary:

$50,000-$62,000 per Year
