Description
Position InformationThe City of Brentwood is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Supervisor to join our Public Works Department, primarily supporting the Wastewater Division while also collaborating closely with the Water Operations Division and its Manager. This supervisor level role is responsible for maintain ELAP certification with the state of California, sample scheduling for three NPDES permits, oversee work of the laboratory staff as well as the Environmental Compliance Inspector, manage budgets, procurement of supplies, reporting of water and wastewater results, be responsible for the laboratory Quality Assurance System and its updates, maintain compliance with state & federal regulations, evaluate as well as train laboratory and environmental compliance personnel, and manage the quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) aspects of lab operations.
Key responsibilities include: - Maintain ELAP Certification with the State of California
- Implementing and maintaining quality control procedures
- Overseeing laboratory operations and regulatory compliance
- Managing data records and certification documentation for reporting purposes
- Foster a culture of safety, precision, accuracy, and continuous improvement

Qualifications Education and Experience Guidelines: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, environmental, natural or physical science, or a related field.
- Four (4) years of increasingly responsible professional laboratory analysis related to the treatment, quality, and distribution of water, treatment of wastewater, and process control efficiencies, including one (1) year of lead experience.
Licenses and Certifications: - Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record must be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of a Grade III Laboratory Analyst Certificate issued by California Water Environment Association (CWEA) or American Water Works Association (AWWA) to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of a Grade I Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate issued by the CWEA is desirable, but not required.

The examination process will consist of: - Application Review - Submitted applications will be assessed based on job-related qualifications, including desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department. Candidates may be screened to identify those who are best qualified to proceed in the examination process.
- Panel Board Interview - Those candidates identified as best qualified will be invited to a panel board interview, tentatively scheduled for the week of November 10, 2025.
Eligible List : All applicants that pass the examination process will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
