Description

The Irvine Valley College (IVC) Dance Department offers a high-quality, comprehensive dance program that serves the current and future learning needs of our diverse community. Our mission is grounded in four core pillars: Communicate, Create, Perform, and Educate. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive environment that encourages both technical and artistic growth.

The department offers multiple academic and professional pathways, including:

• Associate of Arts (AA) in Dance

• Certificate of Achievement in Commercial Dance

• Certificate of Proficiency in Dance Technique

• Certificate of Proficiency in Mind Body Therapy

The curriculum provides a broad range of technique courses, including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, ballroom, Middle Eastern and African dance, and aerial arts. In addition, students engage in dance science courses such as Pilates, conditioning and correction, yoga, and GYROKINESIS®, as well as academic courses in choreography, dance history, and dance appreciation.

Performance opportunities are central to the student experience. The department supports two ensembles:

• Performing Dance Ensemble (PDE): For intermediate and advanced dancers seeking a pre-professional company experience.

• Dance Rehearsal and Performance (R&P) Group: Open to dancers of all levels and genres.

Students regularly participate in regional and national festivals and conferences that showcase advanced student work. Recent participation includes events such as the American College Dance Association (ACDA), Red Rock Dance Festival, Palm Springs International Dance Festival, Alabama Dance Festival, and others across the country.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative and dynamic department consisting of two full-time and seven part-time faculty members, housed within the School of the Arts. We are looking for a colleague who is committed to student success, passionate about dance education, and eager to contribute to the continued growth of the program.

Temporary, part-time faculty positions offer the opportunity to assist a diverse group of students in achieving their educational goals. As one of the largest community college districts in southern California, we offer a wide range of opportunities in transfer, general education, career, and technical education programs. These part-time positions are on an as-needed basis and applicants should live within commuting distance to Orange County.

Performance Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of part-time faculty are to teach classes in accordance with established curriculum and course outlines. The faculty member will prepare and provide students with course outlines, materials, and lectures that support learning objectives set forth in the course syllabus; when requested, help develop, and measure learning outcomes as identified by the department; and assess student performance and maintain grade records.

Report assessment data on student learning outcomes, administrative unit outcomes, and/or student services outcomes.

Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning.

Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.

Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.

Follow the regulations, policies, and procedures of the college and district as published.

Complete all program/college/district reporting deadlines on time.

Complete and submit required documents in a timely manner.

Make use of technology and learning materials that are current, support the lesson, and enable students to engage with the material.

Establish and maintain a framework for regular and sustained contact with/among students if teaching distance education courses.

Teach classes during the scheduled time and at the assigned location.

Meet workload obligations.

Maintain accurate records.

May participate in curriculum review and program development.

Assignments may include day, evening, weekend, on-line and/or off-campus classes.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Must meet one (1) of the following qualifications under (a) through (c):

(a) Master’s in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR

(b) Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts or music OR

(c) A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of (a) or (b) above. Applicants submitting an application on the basis of equivalency must thoroughly and completely answer all of the equivalency questions, in addition to providing all other required materials.
