Interns assist with day-to-day tasks, projects, and operations while learning about local government setting, work culture, and professional standards.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is an Extra Help (temporary) classification that is limited to no more than 900 hours per year. Incumbents are paid only for hours worked, are only entitled to legally mandated benefits, and do not have status. This classification is used for temporary appointment(s) only, to provide job training for Junior or Senior high school, regularly enrolled students, persons who have recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program and are working to complete related licensure or certification requirements, persons who are participating in a supervised training program to meet licensure requirements of the State of California. Duties will vary based on the needs of the department and its programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Interns work under close supervision of a designated supervisor, department manager, or staff. They receive specific instructions on tasks and are guided through work assignments to support learning and development. This position does not exercise supervision over other staff.

- Performs a variety of specialized programs, office, administrative, and general support assignments for the Human Resources Department.
- Prepares and makes presentations consistent with the assigned personnel function(s).
- Conducts research and troubleshoots problems in areas of specialty.
- Gathers, organizes, and maintains data for special studies as directed.
- Reconciles information problems and ensures the accuracy of a variety of records.
- Develops, organizes, and distributes documents for human resources procedures.
- Provides a variety of information about personnel processes, policies, and procedures for the public and County staff.
- Prepares correspondence.
- Prepares, organizes, and conducts employee selection processes to fill vacancies, including developing bulletins and announcements, maintaining required documentation, and sending notices to candidates.
- Processes personnel transactions and maintains personnel files.
- Manages and enters data into the human resources information systems, including applicant tracking, employee demographics, personnel transactions for payroll, retirement, insurances, other benefit information, certifications, training, and other human resources related information.
- Tracks Board of Supervisors’ approval of new classifications and appointments.
- Prepares, organizes, and conducts new employee orientation, including the coordination of new employee paperwork and processes.
- May represent the Human Resources Department at job fairs, career days, high schools, colleges, and recruitment related events.
- May be responsible for coordinating and/or assisting with the coordination, distribution, and tracking for a variety of human resources related processes and programs, including the County’s Drug-Free Workplace Outreach Program.
- May serve as the initial contact for the public, department heads, and other County employees on a wide range of both specialized and general human resources functions.
- May prepare, organize, and conduct meetings and events, which may include taking minutes of official meetings.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (undergraduate or graduate program); or
- Graduated from high school, college, or university within the past 12 months.
Appointments shall be made as an intern.

Incumbents generally work in a typical office environment with adequate light and temperature. WORKING CONDITIONSPositions in this class typically require: sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
A successful candidate will be required to submit to and pass a background check prior to the appointment. Depending upon the position and/or assigned department, the background check may include but is not limited to civil and criminal history check, reference check, Live Scan, and/or credit check (as allowed under state law).
Disaster Service Workers: As members of the County of Lake Emergency Services Organization, all Lake County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and / or County.

INTERNSHIP - TEMPORARY WORK ASSIGNMENT Intern work assignment is determined by County of Lake personnel rules and regulations.
- Interns are typically hired at an hourly rate of pay at the first step of the salary range.
- Interns are paid only for hours worked.
- Interns are only entitled to legally mandated benefits, which does not include paid vacation or holidays.
- Interns do not have status.
- Interns are temporary and may be terminated at any time based on department need.
INTERN APPOINTMENT Interns are limited to no more than 25 hours per week (unless a position is considered seasonal) and no more than 900 hours per fiscal year.
INTERN DURATION - Summer Internship: 10-12 weeks (June to August)
- Fall and Spring Internships: 8-10 weeks
- Negotiated Period : To satisfy the interns’ required hours. Limited to 900 hours per fiscal year.
