Description
DescriptionVacancy is in the Department of Health and Human Services. This is supervisory epidemiology work involving the investigation of the causes and control of disease - the element's contributing to the occurrence or non-occurrence of diseases in Hartford's population. Work involves responsibility for administering a City-wide program in all aspects of epidemiology. Duties include participating in the data collection and analysis of birth, death, reportable disease and other relevant information on the citizens of Hartford. Prepares reports of birth using related selected health factors by census tract. Correlate infant death with births. Prepares reports on the causes of death by age, sex, place of origin, residence and primary occupation. Prepares other reports of health conditions and accidents by age, sex, residence and other appropriate factors. Works with appropriate community resources for obtaining data. Prepares reports for the community; seeks appropriate professional consultation for assistance in interpreting data as necessary. Works with other Health Department staff to plan interventions for protecting the public health and preventing disability. Works with Health Department staff to plan data needs for assessing program effectiveness. Performs related work as required.
This is a HMEA union position. The hours of work are 40 per week and the above salary includes 5% in lieu of overtime.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesThe examination will consist of rating your training and experience as contained on your application. It may also include a written test, an oral test, or a combination thereof. All parts of the examination, including tests and ratings, will be related to the requirements of the position. The examination is designed to measure the following:
Knowledge of: - Modern methods, principles and practices of epidemiology.
Ability to: - Plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate personnel.
- Analyze vital statistics and reportable diseases data.
- Conduct investigations and do follow up on reported diseases.
- Assess chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma, alcoholism and adequacy and accessibility of treatment.
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, representatives of other agencies, and the general public.
QualificationsOpen to all applicants who meet the following qualifications:A four-year degree in public health, statistics, epidemiology or a closely related field
AND three (3) years of experience in biostatistical analysis or community epidemiology.
A Master's Degree or higher in public health statistics, epidemiology or a closely related field preferred.
