A Protective Gear Specialist job is available with The City of Fort Worth Fire Department. We are seeking a Protective Gear Specialist for sewing, inspecting, repairing, and tracking Personal Protective Gear (PPE) for over 900 firefighter personnel.
This is a hands-on position responsible for embroidery, uniform alterations, and gear maintenance to support firefighter safety. Duties include applying patches, custom embroidery, hemming, altering uniforms, repairing PPE, and processing uniform requests. The candidate must be able to operate sewing equipment proficiently, maintain accurate records, and work closely with the team to meet deadlines. Strong multitasking skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work quickly in a fast-paced environment are essential. Travel for training and certification may be required.
The Protective Gear Specialist job responsibilities include: - Driving to fire stations for PPE pickup and delivery.
- Separating PPE gear for washing and inspection.
- Cleaning by hand firefighter boots and helmets.
- Inspecting all pieces of firefighter gear for safety conditions and repairs.
- Repairing or replacing gear.
- Some computer use is required to track personnel lists and completed repairs.
Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma/GED.
- Two years of increasingly responsible sewing or re-upholstery experience with heavy materials.
Preferred Qualifications - Five or more years of relevant sewing with Bunker Gear Material.
- Computer experience, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word and PPE Tracking
- Prior experience working with Bunker Gear and firefighter uniforms
- Prior experience operating an embroidery/sewing machines.
Working Conditions Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting; depending on assignment. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and intense noises.
