Fire Inspector
Description
Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist the Fire Marshal in his or her efforts to prevent fires and hazardous conditions in the City of Lancaster through education, inspection, code compliance, investigation and enforcement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains a working knowledge of the applicable code or standards related to fire inspections.
Maintains all required certifications.
Conducts fire prevention inspections of buildings/structures in the City.
Maintains reviews and updates reports on fires and hazardous material spills.
Inspects apartment complexes, City facilities, convalescent homes, nursing homes, group homes, assisted living centers, daycares and foster care facilities. Inspects fireworks presentations, tents, and issues permits as needed.
Supervises fire prevention activities throughout the year including Fire Prevention Week.
Conducts and oversees public fire safety education with the community to include but not limited to businesses, schools and churches.
Responsible for certain portions of the City of Lancaster’s Emergency Management Plan.
Tests fire protection-related systems.
Prepares inspections, fire and arson reports and field observation reports.
Works closely with the Lancaster Police Department in the investigation of potential or

Verifies that businesses have emergency planning and preparedness measures in place.
Conducts fire exit drills for commercial occupancies when required by code and residential (upon request).
Attends training to maintain all State and Local Certification and qualifications.
Covers office as necessary when other personnel are not available.
Conducts research in response to inquiries from architects, construction planers, engineers, builders, developers, and property owners.
Assists with special events, programs, major incidents and Emergency Operations Center activations.
Conducts fire safety training classes to City employees
Works with State and Federal agencies when required.
Researches, coordinates and prepares grant proposals for available funding.
Other related duties as required by the Fire Marshal.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Required
Texas Certified Fire Inspector
Ability to Review Fire Plans
Preferred
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Peace Officer Certification (Will be required to obtain within two years)
Texas Commission on Fire Protection Fire Investigator Certifications (Will be required to obtain within two years)
