DESCRIPTION

Long Beach Utilities provides safe, clean, reliable and affordable water, gas, and sewer services to the Long Beach community. The service area supports 500,000 customers, represented by 90,000 water accounts, 145,000 gas accounts and 90,000 sewer accounts in 52 square miles. This service area includes Long Beach’s downtown core, waterfront accounts, suburban areas and dense multifamily portions of the region. The Department is currently seeking candidates to fill a Civil Engineering Assistant - Non Career vacancy in the Water Treatment Division.

Non-Career employees are allowed to work a maximum of 1,600 hours over a 12-month period. This position will be scheduled onsite for 30 - 40 hours per week.

Non-Career employees are considered part-time, temporary, at-will employees who are not eligible for paid leave such as vacation, personal leave, or holidays. Non-Career employees subject to Assembly Bill 1522 will earn one (1) hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, including any overtime hours, up to a maximum accrual of 48 hours.

Selected candidates who are not currently employed with the City of Long Beach will be offered health insurance based on the number of hours scheduled per week. Under the Affordable Care Act, existing Non-Career City of Long Beach employees will be eligible for health insurance as determined by the 12-month look back review period of the employee's working hours. This review is done annually in November for coverage to become effective January 1st the following year. Eligibility is reviewed annually and is not guaranteed.

Non-Career employees who are not eligible for enrollment into the CalPERS retirement plan will be enrolled in the City of Long Beach Alternate Retirement System (ARS), which is a defined benefit plan administered by Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS). Eligible employees enrolled into PARS contribute 3.0% of their compensation to the plan.
