INTERN
DEFINITION
An Intern is a temporary, entry-level position designed to provide students or recent graduates with practical, hands-on experience in a professional setting. Interns assist with day-to-day tasks, projects, and operations while learning about local government setting, work culture, and professional standards.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an internship (temporary) classification that is limited to no more than 900 hours per year. Incumbents are paid only for hours worked, are only entitled to legally mandated benefits, and do not have status. This classification is used for temporary appointment(s) only, to provide job training for Junior or Senior high school, regularly enrolled students, persons who have recently graduated from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program and are working to complete related licensure or certification requirements, persons who are participating in a supervised training program to meet licensure requirements of the State of California. Duties will vary based on the needs of the department and its programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Interns work under close supervision of a designated supervisor, department manager, or staff. They receive specific instructions on tasks and are guided through work assignments to support learning and development. This position does not exercise supervision over other staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
Appointments shall be made as an intern.

Incumbents generally work in a typical office environment with adequate light and temperature. There may be occasional exposure?to?extreme temperatures, loud noise, fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation; underground, confined, or restricted?workspaces; and heights more than five stories above ground level.?

WORKING CONDITIONS
Positions in this class typically require: sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

A successful candidate will be required to submit to and pass a background check prior to the appointment. Depending upon the position and/or assigned department, the background check may include but is not limited to civil and criminal history check, reference check, Live Scan, and/or credit check (as allowed under state law).

Disaster Service Workers: As members of the County of Lake Emergency Services Organization, all Lake County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and / or County.

INTERNSHIP - TEMPORARY WORK ASSIGNMENT
Intern work assignment is determined by County of Lake personnel rules and regulations.

INTERN APPOINTMENT

Interns are limited to no more than 25 hours per week (unless a position is considered seasonal) and no more than 900 hours per fiscal year.
