Duties Description This full-time, seasonal position will assist the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in providing customer service and cashier support to patrons who visit the Nature Museum and Gift Shop. Connetquot River State Park Preserve is the location for the Long Island Region’s Environmental Education Office. Under the general direction and supervision of Environmental Education personnel, this Park and Rec Aide 3 position will be engaged in the performance and coordination of the following duties:
* Provide reception support at the Nature Museum / Gift Shop’s reception desk five (5) days per week, including greeting visitors, answering questions from the public, and answering the phones.
* Assist with checking in visitors for programs when they arrive.
* Assist visitors with purchasing items from the Gift Shop and restock the Gift Shop as needed.
* Assist with administrative tasks for the Regional Environmental Education Office as needed.
* Assist visitors with questions, resolve complaints, and assist patrons with emergencies or situations requiring First Aid.
* Basic maintenance of building, including, but not limited to, vacuuming, emptying garbage and recycling, and restocking/light cleaning of staff bathroom.
* Assist with care and maintenance of exhibit animals: ensure all housing is kept clean and that the requirements necessary for the health of the animals are met. Handling of animals will be required, including snakes, turtles, and walking sticks.
* Performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Preferred qualifications:
* Pursuing a BA or BS in Environmental Studies/Science, Biology, History, or a related degree.
* Ability to speak multiple languages is a plus.
* Ability to care for small animals is a plus.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
* Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
* Must be at least 18 years old
* Must possess strong organizational and critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently or on a team.
* Must be willing to keep current on all mandated OPRHP trainings, including First Aid and CPR/AED.
* Must be able to provide friendly and helpful customer service to park visitors.
* Ability to operate a cash register (training will be provided).
* Ability to use Microsoft Outlook for emailing with supervisor/team and Microsoft Word for making signs.
* The appointee will be expected to work weekends, holidays, and special events as required to provide operational coverage.
