An island community rich in history and opportunity, Galveston is the ideal place to live, work and raise a family!Job DescriptionSUMMARY: Under general supervision, oversees the work of private contractors to ensure compliance with City requirements and overall quality assurance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Provides quality assurance to oversee contractors to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
• Interacts with contractor and plant personnel as necessary.
• Communicates with engineers, contractors and architects as needed.
• Performs contract document reviews.
• Participates in various meetings regarding projects and their status, including pre-construction and progress meetings.
• Verifies the installation of materials on project sites.
• Verifies the presence of materials on- and off-site for construction projects.
• Prepares daily reports of activities.
• Reviews pay requests from contractors for approval.
• Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
• Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge:
• City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
• Construction project inspection methods and practices.
• Engineering design and construction practices and procedures.
• Construction plans and specifications.
• TCEQ codes.
• Local, state and federal regulations affecting civil engineering operations.
• Principles and practices of project management.
• Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
Skill in:
• Managing situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
• Providing efficient customer service.
• Understanding and applying City policies and procedures, and applicable federal and state regulations.
• Explaining City policies and procedures.
• Interpreting specifications, plans and blueprints.
• Performing various mathematical calculations.
• Using a tape measure.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
• Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent; AND three years’ experience in construction inspection operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:
• Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May have some exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to climb ladders and scaffolding. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
