The Monterey County Probation Department is seeking qualified individuals to fill vacancies for Deputy Probation Officer I. Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry level classification in the Deputy Probation Officer series, offering various career paths for future growth. This position works initially under close supervision while performing a full range of probation duties, to include supervising a caseload of juvenile and/or adult offenders; counseling clients; conducting pre-sentence investigations/reports for the courts; making recommendations to the court on the disposition of cases and performing other related work as required.

This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority in accordance with the Flexible Staffing Program and Guidelines.

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:

Education:
Completion of the requirements for a Degree in Administration of Justice, Criminology, Psychology, Sociology or a closely related field at a college or university;
OR
Experience:
Two years of experience performing a full range of duties comparable to those of the Juvenile Institution Officer series in Monterey County
