Water Safety Coordinator - Taconic Region
Description
Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Safety Manager, the Water Safety Coordinator is responsible for the region’s water safety program and oversees the conduct of regional water safety activities on a seasonal basis. The incumbent will communicate on a regularly with the Regional Management Team, Regional Safety Manager and Facility Managers in addition to the Director of Water Safety as needed or requested. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Assisting in recruiting, testing, hiring and training of water safety personnel;
• Reviewing lifeguard certifications for acceptability;
• Assuring lifeguard Letters of Agreement are signed;
• Working with park managers on scheduling personnel as well as administering the region’s Learn to Swim program;
• Performing regular inspections of all regional aquatic facilities;
• Filing written reports with the Regional Office and the Agency Water Safety Unit;
• Recommending necessary action to achieve the safest and most efficient operation of the regional bathing facilities;
• Training supervisory lifeguards and assures that an effective In-Service training program is maintained;
• May conduct training of non-supervisory lifeguards;
• Assisting police and the State Director of Water Safety with investigations of serious accidents, submersions or drowning;
• Coordinating lifeguard equipment and uniform inventories and advises water safety equipment purchase requests for the region;
• Performing other water safety duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications The Regional Water Safety Coordinator should be currently certified as a “waterfront lifeguarding instructor” and have at least three seasons (six months) experience as a supervising lifeguard. The required practical leadership may have been with NYS Parks or an equivalent capacity in another organization.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be willing to report to other facilities if operationally necessary.
