The Street Maintenance Worker I performs entry level, semi-skilled work in the inspection, construction, maintenance and repair of the city’s streets, sidewalks, alleys, medians, curbs and gutters. They complete a wide variety of duties, such as hand excavation, heavy lifting, hauling materials, operating tools and heavy equipment, etc., as part of a larger crew. This job is the first level of a three-level career progression of Street Maintenance Worker I, II, and III.

Qualifications

Experience:No experience is required.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. The ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance is required.

Licenses & Certifications:A valid driver's license and favorable driving record are required. A class B commercial driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements are required within six months of employment. Must be able to operate a commercial vehicle within the State of Kansas.

Environmental or Physical Demands:Street Maintenance Workers perform their job duties outside in all types of weather and are exposed to conditions including sun, wind, rain, snow, ice, pollen, dust, fumes, and other allergens or airborne particles. They are exposed to noise from traffic and equipment. They must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of one’s arms and legs moving one’s whole body to lift, balance, walk, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch and while handling or carrying materials. They operate a variety of hand and power tools, powered equipment, and commercial vehicles. They may drive or ride from site-to-site multiple times throughout the workday. Must be able to work safely in distracting situations including high volume traffic areas.
