Description

TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Working with the Curatorial Services team in the Cultural Resources program, the curator position will help protect and preserve the interpretive artifacts, artworks, and specimens that tell the stories of Texas State Parks.

Under the direction of the State Parks Chief Curator, this position performs complex (journey-level) to highly complex (senior-level) curatorial work. Curatorial Services cares for interpretive property used to tell the story of Texas State Parks. Work involves providing expertise and support to State Park staff through site-specific collection management, training, and research for the acquisition, management, and preservation of State Park artifact, artwork, and specimen collections. Duties include developing and implementing statewide collections guidelines, standards, and tools. Job requires performance of physical labor in various climates and environments. Additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch, and Program rules, regulations, and procedures.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Museum Science, United States or Texas History, Material Culture Studies, Anthropology, or Social Sciences.

Experience:

Curator II

Three years experience with museum collection management or archival work,

Experience with digitization of records and/or digital records storage systems and processes.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Curator III

Five years experience with museum collection management or archival work

Experience with digitization of records and/or digital records storage systems and processes.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Licensure:

Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of the position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining the required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Museum Science or closely related field may substitute for two years of the required experience in museum collection management or archival work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Museum Science.

Experience:

Experience working with a wide variety of artifacts, specimens, and artwork;

Experience working within a system of sites or parks;

Experience implementing storage solutions, moving a collection, and integrated pest management;

Experience managing or participating in a digitization, imaging, or oral history project;

Experience facilitating volunteer and intern collection management projects;

Experience in artifact preservation and conservation techniques.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge, skills and abilities should directly support the essential job functions.

Curator II:

Knowledge of best practices and principles of collection management;

Knowledge of basic object maintenance, preservation, and conservation principles;

Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations as applied to cultural and natural resources;

Curator III:

Knowledge of Curator II PLUS:

Knowledge of United States and Texas history and culture, decorative arts, or natural history;

Knowledge of project management principles;

Knowledge of advanced object maintenance, preservation, and conservation practices;

Curator II:

Skill in effective verbal, written, and visual communication, involving research, writing, and presentation;

Skill in use of collection management databases;

Skill in use of imaging tools and software;

Skill in housing and preserving museum collections;

Curator III:

Skills of Curator II PLUS:

Skill in object maintenance and preservation practices;

Skill in planning and implementing collection management projects;

Curator II:

Ability to learn new subjects quickly and synthesize knowledge into effective communication;

Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously using excellent time management skills;

Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to work as a member of a team with frequent interruptions and changing priorities;

Curator III:

Ability of Curator II PLUS:

Ability to write and review reports, publications, grant proposals, and other materials;

Ability to oversee, train, and/or supervise the work of interns, volunteers, temporary staff, and others.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions;

May be required to work within confined spaces;

Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 20% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
