THE POSITION

The City of Sacramento is seeking a Public Safety Administrative Manager, with the working title of Fire Administrative Manager, to join the Fire Administrative Services division within the Fire Department. This role will oversee and lead the department's personnel and finance operations, which include payroll, procurement, accounting, budgeting, and other personnel-related needs as assigned by the Fire Chief. The Fire Administrative Manager will report to the Fire Chief or their designee in their absence and will have supervisory responsibilities over each area of their authority.

Under limited direction, the Public Safety Administrative Manager performs difficult administrative duties in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of a large division and/or major functional unit while meeting the goals and objectives of the Department; assists in designing and implementing procedures, methods, and programs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a civilian management-level classification populated with multiple incumbents. The Public Safety Administrative Manager performs duties that are administrative or managerial in nature, with substantial authority for managing staff and activities of a specialized nature. Incumbents have extensive contact with sworn personnel, department staff, other City employees, various public/private organizations, and the general public. This classification is responsible for developing, proposing, and implementing policies, procedures, goals, and objectives within their scope of responsibility. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Administrative Officer in that the latter may handle one or more major functions of centralized administrative services, while the former is responsible for directing the activities for a large division and/or major functional unit.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Limited direction is provided by higher-level management. Responsibilities include broad supervisory authority over a diverse group of supervisory, professional, technical, and support positions whose incumbents perform specialized public safety service-related activities.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:

Five years of increasingly responsible professional administrative experience, including at least three years in a supervisory position. Experience in a public safety setting is highly desirable.

Education:

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in, public administration, business administration, or public safety administration or a related field.

Substitution:

Possession of a Master's Degree in a related field will substitute for one year of required professional administrative experience.

Proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts anddegrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass Live Scan/fingerprinting. If applicable, candidates may also need to pass a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
