Description

This is an entry-level, multi-divisional classification for use in Recreation & Parks, Public Works, Water Resources, or other related departments. Under direct supervision, performs routine and semiskilled manual work of limited difficulty in the maintenance of water canals, storm drainage basins, parks/trees, sewers, solid waste, streets, traffic painting, or related areas. Performs a wide variety of duties related to maintenance and equipment operation. A broad range of equipment may be operated. Employees may be required to work on a 24-hour rotational shift basis including weekends, holidays and declared emergencies. Employees are on-call for emergencies after regular hours and must be willing to work overtime. Performs related duties as required.

Representative Duties

The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Cleans sewer water pipes using hydro cleaner and dump truck; Drives truck in response to emergency calls; Locates problems and operates sewer cleaning equipment to clear stoppages; Works with crew raising, lowering, and repairing sewer manholes performing heavy manual labor; Mixes concrete and executes necessary masonry work; Inspects sewage and storm water lift stations; Disassembles and cleans pumps and performs minor repairs when necessary. Operates a variety of equipment such as skip loaders and other related equipment; Drives and operates a dump truck, or other related equipment in transporting debris, road sweeping and other materials; Loads and unloads trucks alone; Performs hand cleaning, maintenance work and heavy manual labor.

Minimum Qualifications

Examination (Weighted: 100%)

March 20, 2025 (Tentative) An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

NOTE: Admission to the Examination may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination. Employment applications must be properly completed in accordance with instructions on face of application form. All pertinent information needed to determine that the applicant meets the minimum qualifications must be shown on the application, resume, supplemental questionnaire, and typing certificate; otherwise, the application may be rejected. Full Summary of Benefits by Bargaining Unit:VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).

RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
