THE POSITION

The Park Maintenance Worker III (Volunteer Coordinator) serves as the division's primary representative working with members of the public and other organizations in the coordination, facilitation, and execution of volunteer efforts within city parkland facilities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT

The ideal candidate for the Park Maintenance Worker III (Volunteer Coordinator) will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written. Extensive experience working directly with the public in a coordinating role is highly desired.
Under limited direction, oversees and performs care, maintenance and construction work of community gardens and specialized park and recreation areas. Maintains and propagates various plants and planted areas; and, cultivates soil, constructs horticultural features, controls pest and identifies plant disease. Plans, trains, and directs the work of crew members and volunteers.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Park Maintenance Worker III is distinguished from the Park Maintenance Worker II by the level and scope of responsibility over employees and specialized assignments. The Park Maintenance Worker II is the lead worker class in the series requiring greater skill and independence than lower level classes in the series.

Depending on the assigned area the Park Maintenance Worker III has oversight of various community activities related to the community gardens and specialized park and recreation areas; or, special city-wide park maintenance projects. This classification is responsible for supervising and directing the work of crew members and volunteers in their assigned area.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is received from a Parks Supervisor or higher-level classifications.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:
Five years of experience in one or any combination of the following: Park Maintenance Worker II, horticulture, volunteer management, arboriculture, landscape architecture, parks management, irrigation programming and repairs, or related field.

Substitution:
Completion of courses from an accredited college or university in horticulture, arboriculture, forestry, landscape architecture, turf management, parks management, volunteer management, irrigation programming and repairs, or related field may substitute for experience. A year of experience is 30 semester or equivalent quarter units.

PROOF OF EDUCATION

Should education be used to qualify for this position, then proof of education such as, but not limited to, university/college transcripts and degrees should be submitted with your application and will be required at the time of appointment . Unofficial documents and/or copies are acceptable.

An applicant with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have education records evaluated by a credentials evaluation service. Evaluation of education records will be due at time of appointment.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
Employees must complete twelve (12) months of probation at a satisfactory performance level prior to gaining permanent status.

2. Screening Committee : (Pass/Fail)- Human Resources will evaluate employment applications for the minimum qualifications stated on the job announcement.

Only those candidates determined to be the most qualified will proceed to the next step in the selection process. 4. Performance Test: (Weighted 100%) - Qualified candidates will be notified by email of the test date, time, and location approximately one to two weeks prior to the test. The performance test will be job related and may include, but not limited to, the knowledge and abilities as outlined above. The performance exam will be administered in English only.

TEST EXEMPTION - If you have previously taken the Park Maintenance Worker III Exam within the past year of the final filing date of this posting, you may be considered exempt from taking the Park Maintenance Worker III Exam.

The City of Sacramento’s Human Resources Department will verify applicant’s eligibility at the time of the final filing deadline of this job posting.

5. Eligibility - Candidates who pass the performance test will be placed on an eligible list. The hiring department may contact those on the eligible list for an interview at any time during the life of the one-year list. Candidate’s eligibility expires year from the date of notification of a passing score for the Park Maintenance Worker III examination. Candidates can take the examination at any time to maintain eligibility.







6. Conditional Hire : Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass LiveScan/fingerprinting; review by Human Resources, a pre-employment medical exam, controlled substance and/or alcohol test, and possess any required licensure or certification prior to receiving a start date from the Department. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
