Description

Captains perform administrative duties assisting the Chief of Police in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Police Department. Captains are assigned to command divisions or sections within the Police Department. Plans, supervises, and coordinates divisional programs and activities through subordinates; establishes law enforcement and administrative policies, work standards, and procedures for the division; studies and evaluates divisional operations for effectiveness and conformance to standards and implements changes and improvements; assists in establishing long-range goals and objectives for the department; maintains contact with the community and other law enforcement agencies on law enforcement operations; investigates and resolves unusual or sensitive complaints and incidents; monitors the investigation of major criminal activities in the City; reviews crime patterns and trends and makes recommendations for redirecting law enforcement efforts; assists in general departmental administration; develops and administers the division budget; evaluates the work performance of subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

HIGHLY DESIRABLE :

Possess a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in

Business or Public Administration, Criminology, Police Science, or other related field.

REQUIRED DIPLOMA/TRANSCRIPTS/CERTIFICATE: It is the applicant's responsibility to make certain that a copy of their college transcripts and/or diploma and POST Management Certificate is in their departmental personnel file in Police Headquarters by the filing deadline. Any applicant who does not meet this requirement will be rejected and notified accordingly .

Examination (Weighted: 100%)

Date: Week of January 27 th , 2025 (Tentative) : The exam will be announced, but may include one or more of the following: presentation/in-basket; performance exam; oral exam; evaluation of education and experience, leadership skills, technical knowledge and abilities, judgement, communication skills or other qualifications as shown by the application, or by other information submitted, or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. All exam components will be equally weighted. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.

Full Summary of Benefits by Bargaining Unit:VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14+ years of service: 20 days per year.

VACATION - FIRE SAFETY SHIFT PERSONNEL ONLY:
1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16+ years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)

HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.

INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).

RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
