Key Responsibilities:

• Student Mentorship: Train and support undergraduates in creating high-quality models and prototypes.
• Graduate Research Assistance: Provide fabrication expertise to graduate students for research projects.
• Lab Safety & Compliance: Ensure a safe lab environment, manage chemical inventory, and follow EH&S guidelines.
• Equipment & Inventory Management: Oversee State and Foundation inventory and maintain equipment.
• Project Support: Assist with faculty research, instructional labs, and student capstone projects.
• Supervision of Assistants: Train and supervise student assistants in the Fabrication Facility.
• Resource Procurement: Manage purchases for the facility using the state PCC card.

Position Information

• This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
• This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
• Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
• The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The SDSU Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an accredited program leading to the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) and the BSME with Bioengineering emphasis. The Department also offers a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (MSME), a M.S. degree in Bioengineering (MSBE) and participates in the Joint Doctoral Program (JDP) in collaboration with UCSD. There are about 1390 undergraduate students and about 90 graduate students enrolled in the MS and doctoral programs. The department personnel consists of 24 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty, about twelve lecturers, 1.5 technicians, one administrative support coordinator, one administrative support assistant, and a number of adjunct and affiliated faculty.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment.

Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned. completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Key Qualifications

• Experience in the operation and maintenance of Haas mills and lathes, Prototrak milling machines, and abrasive waterjet cutting machines.
• Proficiency in Mig and Tig welding, manual lathes, and general shop tools.
• Skilled in using hand-held power tools in a fabrication environment.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals from a diverse range of populations.
• Ability to mentor and instruct a diverse range of students in the safe and effective operation of all machine tools.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $7,542 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,845 - $8,765 per month.
