Summary

Police Officer

Police Officers preserve public peace; protect life and property; work within the community to prevent crime and enforce the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin.

Essential functions include safely carrying, maintaining, andoperating issued firearms and other police equipment; enforcing the ordinances of the City of Brookfield and the laws of the State of Wisconsin; responding to calls for service; conducting investigations of suspicious persons or situations and preliminary investigation of major crimes and criminal activity; preparing investigative reports; identifying, detaining, and processing wanted individuals; interviewing suspects and witnesses; preparing for and testifying in court as to the facts surrounding any criminal, departmental or civil action; patrolling the City of Brookfield in a police vehicle and/or on foot as directed; preparing accurate and complete reports of daily activities; providing assistance to the community in the areas of crime prevention; enforcing motor vehicle laws to promote safety and to reduce accidents and expedite traffic flow; and attending in-service training as mandated by the State of Wisconsin or as directed.

Minimum requirements include being at least 18 years old at the time of application, United States citizenship, a valid Wisconsin driver's license, an associate degree from a Wisconsin technical college system district or its accredited equivalent from another state, or a minimum of 60 college level credits from an accredited college or university, and meeting physical readiness standards.

Additionally, candidates must possess the ability to read, understand, and explain City of Brookfield ordinances and Wisconsin Statutes; communicate effectively with a diverse population; write accurate and complete reports; interact constructively and productively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public; display civil and courteous conduct and a customer-service orientation; memorize and retain new information; identify, critically evaluate and resolve a problem or issue; make quick and appropriate decisions in stressful situations; maintain self-control and take direction from supervisors; have a positive attitude and good work habits; and have good moral character.

Disqualifiers include having been convicted of a felony, dishonorably discharged from any branch of the United States Military Service, convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, prohibited from carrying or possessing a firearm for any reason, or any willful misrepresentation in regard to any material fact.

The salary range for this position is $37.82-$49.76 per hour, with annual increases based upon successful job performance. The City offers a generous benefit package, as negotiated with the Brookfield Professional Police Association. New employees with continuous, full-time, sworn law enforcement experience may begin employment at a step in the range and vacation accrual that is commensurate with their years of experience serving in a sworn police officer position.
