Job TitlePublic Safety OfficerJob DescriptionUnder the general oversight of the assigned shift Sergeant, the Public Safety Officer performs routine policy enforcement and security work in the protection of people and in the safeguarding of university property. The Public Safety Officer secures assigned property against possible loss or damage and is charged with ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports for compliance with established policies, procedures, and guidelines. The officer performs other work as requested. There are currently Night Shift (18:00 - 06:00) positions available.Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Employment duties include, but are not limited to:Patrol/make rounds of the assigned area by foot or vehicle; watch for unauthorized persons or activities; report unusual instances to shift Sergeant; call police for assistance if necessaryAssist with traffic directions and parking for special detailsProvide University information to Stetson faculty, staff, and visitorsEscort Stetson community members to and from buildings and parking lots as neededMaintain lost and found servicesCheck for safety, fire, and/or security hazardsMonitor fire and security alarmsLock and unlock facilities as requested by an authorized person(s)Prepare reports; issue traffic citations; provide disaster and emergency evaluation and management; relieve dispatcher when necessaryPerform some minor building maintenance tasks, i.e., securing broken windows, turning off water, and resetting 110-volt electric circuit breakersRespond to various types of building and equipment alarms, coordinating with the local Fire and Police Departments as they respondPerform similar and other position-related work as requestedRequired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The knowledge, skills, and abilities for this role include:Knowledge of the structure and function of the UniversityKnowledge of state, county, and local laws, rules, and ordinancesKnowledge of University policies and proceduresAbility to follow oral and written instructionsAbility to follow a chain of commandAbility to maintain confidentiality regarding investigations, incidents, reports, etc., and to safeguard the privacy of individualsAbility to work effectively with othersAbility to deal with the public tactfully and courteouslyAbility and alertness in observing unusual conditions and in reporting them to proper authoritiesAbility to maintain recordsAbility to prepare clear, accurate, and concise written reports in EnglishSkill in the application of proper safety precautionsAbility to work occasional overtime, rotating shift work, 24-hour emergency on-call statusRequired Qualifications: This position requires:High school diploma or GEDTwo (2) years of military, law enforcement, or security experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and trainingThree (3) years of Level II security work or higherMust possess a "Class D" security license with the State of Florida or be willing to pursue and secure such certification (State of Florida Chapter 493)Per our Tobacco Use policy (see the full policy here), all University property have been designated tobacco/smoke-free. This Policy applies twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University's auto insurance carrier.Ideal Candidate Qualifications: The ideal candidate's qualifications include:Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or Criminology; or an equivalent combination of education and trainingWork Environment: Duties require both indoor and outdoor work; direct exposure to prevailing weather, extreme heat, humidity, and extreme cold; physical ability to endure standing and/or walking for long periods, stair climbing, bending, stooping, manual dexterity; lifting of up to fifty pounds; and perceptual demands for sound, form, depth.Pay Grade: 2 Work authorization sponsorship may be available for this position. However, sponsorship is contingent upon the non-applicability of the visa petition fees outlined in the relevant Executive Order signed September 19, 2025. Due to the recent federally-mandated increased financial expense, the university is not in a position to absorb this significantly increased cost of sponsorship for new H-1B petitions at this time. International candidates are encouraged to apply, but should be aware that eligibility for sponsorship will be evaluated in accordance with current U.S. immigration regulations and institutional policies.
