About the Law Department The Law Department, under the direction of the City Attorney, provides comprehensive legal services to the City (as a whole) as well as the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and all City entities. It represents the City in all legal matters, manages litigation, prosecutes ordinance violations, and provides legal counsel on issues affecting municipal interests. The Department reviews and approves contracts and official documents, prepares legislation, and performs additional duties assigned by ordinance or resolution. Organized to address a broad range of legal areas, including corporate, litigation, and prosecutorial functions, the Department ensures compliance with the law, supports effective governance, and protects the City's legal and financial interests.

What You'll Do:
- Assists in the witness preparation of all non-Domestic Violence related ordinance violations in the Kansas City Municipal Court.
- Performs all work under the direction of the City Prosecutor.
- Makes telephone calls, sends letters and emails, and has in-person contact with victims and witnesses, both civilian and police, to ensure their appearance at trial and to advise witnesses of changes in court docketing and trial dates.
- Contacts victims of crime to obtain their input regarding cases.
- Attends court and makes contact with victims and witnesses in the courtroom.
- Provides vital information to prosecutors during court proceedings.
- Connects victims with available services and resources.
- Obtains evidence, including police reports, photographs, videos, medical records, and other relevant documentation.
- Attaches evidence to case files.
- Tracks time and statistical data for grant reporting purposes.
- Completes responsibilities associated with VOCA grant-funded requirements and reporting.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
REQUIRES - An accredited Associate's degree or certificate in paralegal studies (sometimes also called legal assistant or other similar terms); OR an accredited Bachelor's degree; OR high school graduation and 3 years of experience working in a law office performing administrative work

Positions requiring a high school diploma/GED certificate must be obtained from a school/program accredited by the Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained. Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.
If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
