Description
Overview A proven leader with exceptional communication skills that can contribute to an environment of high performance and customer-centric service. Responsible for planning, directing, managing, and overseeing the activities and operations of the Development Services Department's Building Division, which is responsible for conducting commercial and residential plan review and inspections. Coordinates assigned activities and provides oversight and assistance to Inspectors, Plan Reviewers, and Supervisory staff.
Responsibilities - A highly experienced building and safety professional to serve as the Deputy Building Official. Will be responsible for providing auxiliary leadership to the Building Division comprised of approximately 30 employees responsible for critical services including: plan review, building inspection, ordinance interpretation and responding to customer inquiries. Will have a critical leadership role and will be responsible for public presentations, meetings, projects, and other ventures
- Oversight interpretation, and supervision of the building inspectors regarding inspection practices, training, International Code Council (ICC) interpretations
- Technical oversight of all plan examiners. knowledge and ability to interpret and evaluate complex construction plans and ability to communicate across a wide spectrum of audiences ranging from homeowners, trades people, commercial construction developers and design professionals
- Implementing City policies and procedures including but not limited to technical construction code amendments and adoptions. fee structures and the execution of department Business Plan and Strategic Initiatives
- Serves as the Building Division liaison to other Internal Development Services Divisions Including Land Development, Project Management and Administration within Development Services and other City Departments including Utilities, Public Works, Engineering Services, Planning, Code Enforcement and the Fire Department. Attends meetings and provides recommendations on behalf of Plan Review and Inspection staff, liaison to the Coastal Bend Home Builders Association, Association of General Contractors (SCG)
- Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). Texas Air Conditioning Contractors of America (TAACC) and the Construction Trade Advisory & Appeal Board
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work - Exempt - Full-Time
- Non rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
- In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

Qualifications - Bachelor's Degree (BA/ BS)
- Seven (7) years of experience
Licenses and Certifications - Certified Building Official is required within twelve (12) months of hire
- A license as an Architect of Engineer issued by the State of Texas is highly preferred
Required - Advanced knowledge in Excel
- A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

Basis of Rating A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
