Note: The starting negotiable salary offer will be between $105,044.00 - $115,403.50 to commensurate with experience and education.

Current Assignment:

This announcement will be used to establish an eligibility pool to fill vacancies that may occur within the next twelve (12) months. Currently, the Vehicle Systems Engineering Department has two (2) Junior Vehicle Systems Engineer vacancies.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District is seeking motivated and skilled Junior Vehicle Systems Engineers to join the Rolling Stock & Shops Engineering Division. This is an exciting opportunity for emerging engineers to contribute directly to the reliability, modernization, and performance of one of the nation’s largest and most innovative rail transit systems.

These positions offer a unique opportunity to develop practical engineering experience while contributing to the safe and reliable movement of hundreds of thousands of Bay Area riders each day.

Note: We will be hiring one selected JVSE candidate to be assigned to Electrical division and one JVCE candidate to be assigned to the Mechanical division in the Vehicle Systems Engineering group.

Ideal candidate for the Electrical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE) group:

The ideal candidate would have a degree in Electrical engineering. They will demonstrate high competency in writing reports and technical procedures. They will support engineering initiatives focused on maintaining and improving BART’s fleet of rail vehicles, including electrical power systems, microcontroller devices, ethernet networking, and other electric and electro-mechanical systems. This assignment offers hands-on exposure to transit vehicle engineering in a fast-paced operational environment where safety, reliability, sustainability, and innovation are top priorities.

Ideal candidate for the Mechanical Vehicle Systems Engineering (VSE) group:

The ideal candidate would have a degree in Mechanical engineering. The selected candidate will support engineering initiatives focused on maintaining and improving BART’s fleet of rail vehicles, including mechanical, propulsion, braking, and electro-mechanical systems. This assignment offers hands-on exposure to transit vehicle engineering in a fast-paced operational environment where safety, reliability, sustainability, and innovation are top priorities.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assists with a variety of vehicle engineering duties in support of the design, repair, overhaul, evaluation, reliability, and maintenance of District rail transit vehicles.

Provides support in creating and modifying engineering specifications, drawings, and calculations/analyses; gathers data to assist in engineering decisions.

Assists in conducting field inspections and investigations into equipment failures of rangingseverity; and participates in recommendations for corrective actions or equipment design changes.

Assists in design and specification of special testing and servicing equipment to troubleshoot and maintain vehicle subsystems.

Assists in designing computer hardware and software modifications; and analyzes and resolves computer, electrical, or mechanical systems malfunctions.

Provides technical information, such as specifications, drawings, testing results, and evaluations, to journey-level engineering staff in support of transit vehicle repair, engineering, and design.

Assists in preparing engineering designs, specification costs and quantity estimates for engineering construction projects.

Conducts special studies and prepares a variety of reports and correspondence.

Gathers data and information to assist in development of quality assurance criteria and inspection procedures and may assist with related audits for compliance.

Operates a variety of mechanical and electrical test and measurement equipment in a safe and effective manner.



Minimum Qualifications

Education :

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Substitution :

Professional experience as outlined above may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Must possess sufficient mobility to perform field inspections and investigations.
