Position Overview

The City of Henderson announces an examination to create an eligibility list and to fill one (1) vacancy for the classification of Communications Operator I in the Police Department. The eligibility list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to six (6) months or up to one (1) year, depending on employment status.**

Under direct supervision, receives requests for emergency services and dispatches law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services via radio; and performs related duties as required.

**NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES:
Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, full-time non-probationary employees successfully completing the assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to six (6) months.

Probationary full-time, part-time, temporary employees, and external candidates who successfully complete the testing process will be placed on separate list(s), which may be used to fill vacancies for up to one (1) year. If the vacancy is not filled by full-time non-probationary employees, the separate list(s) may be utilized.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Must be willing to work rotating shifts to include graveyard, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted in the Communications Center of the City of Henderson Police Department. Incumbents work within a noisy and confined work area with radio traffic, ringing telephones, and conversations occurring simultaneously. Work involves receiving telephone calls from persons who are involved in emergency and non-emergency situations who may be hysterical, frightened, or angry. The City of Henderson conducts an extensive training program that includes up to fourteen (14) weeks of classroom academy involving lecture and hands-on simulator training with all of the Communication Center's computer systems. After the academy, individuals receive on-the-job training with certified trainers for a minimum of six (6) months. The City of Henderson also provides and pays for Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) and Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certifications.

Requests for sit-along(s) or private tours with the City of Henderson Communications Center are not available during the duration of this recruitment.

ASSESSMENT DATES:
Skill-Based Keyboarding Examination* Remote/Online (Pass/Fail): Test invitations and instructions will be sent on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. Candidates will be allotted 48 hours to complete the assessment.

*Candidates will be required to pass the keyboarding portion of the assessment process based on the number of net words per minute (WPM) listed in the minimum qualifications. Please click here for more information on our keyboarding examination and to access the practice test.

CritiCall Examination | Remote / Online (Weighted 50%): Test invitations and instructions will be sent on Monday, July 13, 2026. Candidates will be allotted 48 hours to complete the assessment.

Candidates who have passed the typing test and meet the minimum qualifications will be sent an email with a link to complete the CritiCall examination. This examination must be completed by the date/time listed in the notice/invite. Candidates who successfully complete and pass the online CritiCall examination may be invited to the Structured Selection Interview.

The assessment and selection process for this position will take place on the dates listed above. All candidates who wish to be considered for this position will need to be in Henderson, Nevada, and make themselves available to participate in the testing process at any time on any of the dates listed above.

Selection Process

This role requires authorized access to the Nevada Criminal Justice Information System (NCJIS) and/or the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). As a CJIS-covered position, it is exempt from NRS 268.402, also known as Nevada’s “Ban-the-Box” law.

The selection process will begin with an employment application package screening, with the best-qualified candidates being invited to participate further in the assessment process. This process may include any combination of written, performance, and oral assessments to evaluate job-related education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The City will provide reasonable accommodation to qualified individuals with disabilities. Appointment may be subject to the successful and timely completion of a post offer pre-employment background investigation, polygraph examination, and medical/physical examination, including a drug/alcohol test.
