Street Sweeper Operator is a journey level class in which incumbents operate a motor driven street sweeper to clean City streets and gutters in assigned areas. Incumbents may be assigned to any eight-hour shift.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates a motor driven street sweeper in an assigned area to clean streets and gutters.
- Services, cleans, and makes minor adjustments/repairs to the street sweeper.
- Cleans storm drains and gutters.
- Keeps daily records of work performed.
- Performs related duties as required.

The current vacancy exists in the Solid Waste Management Division of the Public Utilities Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination.
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion.
One (1) year of experience in the operation of construction, agricultural and related equipment with complex operating requirements.
The work experience section MUST include specific types of equipment and/or vehicles operated.
Knowledge of City geography and street locations. Must be able to read and follow maps.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Work independently and as part of a team.
Special Requirement(s):
Must possess a valid Commercial Class B California Driver’s License without airbrake restriction at time of application and maintain the appropriate license for the entire term of employment in this classification.
Applicants MUST attach a current copy (issued within the past 30 days) of their driving record obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV printouts obtained from the DMV’s kiosk, website or office are acceptable. The City of Fresno does not reimburse the cost of obtaining the DMV driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that are necessary to safely, effectively, and efficiently perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
This classification’s physical demands involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with assistance, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical demands may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking. Climbing in and out of cab and ladders, balancing on uneven surfaces to perform essential maintence on the sweeper. Exposure to extreme heat, cold and rain.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
This position has been designated as being Safety Sensitive, which requires all eligibles offered employment to successfully pass a drug test prior to employment. Federal law requires individuals applying for positions involving the operation of certain transit vehicles, revenue service vehicles, the transportation of hazardous materials, or heavy equipment over 26,001 pounds requiring a commercial driver's license, must undergo pre-employment drug testing as a condition of employment. This classification is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout the entire term of employment in this class.
SELECTION PROCESS The examination process may consist of the following:
Written Examination - 100%: A job-related written examination will be administered that may test a candidate's knowledge in interpersonal relationships, transportation, safety and other job-related items.
The written exam is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 13, 2026.
The City reserves the right to amend any phase of the examination process should there be a limited number of successful candidates. Should such amendment be exercised, a candidate's final score and placement on the eligible list would be based upon the completed test phase(s).
Candidates eligible for an interview may also be required to undergo a performance exercise as part of the interview process. A panel of subject matter experts may be assembled to observe a candidate's ability to perform a set of job-related tasks. The performance exercise may consist of performing a DMV type pre-trip vehicle inspection and ability to drive and operate a motor driven street sweeper in a satisfactory manner.
