$5,877 - $7,023 per month ($70,524 - $84,276 annually)

Position Summary

The Broadcast and Studio Engineer is responsible for coordinating the technical operation, maintenance, and development of production facilities within the Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) Department, the School of Cinema and the Journalism Department. This position supports the planning, operation, and upkeep of studio and control room systems, ensuring the integrity, safety, and reliable performance of video laboratories, digital production workflows (including streaming), and campuswide signal distribution pathways to support the delivery of the participating departments’ related curricular offerings.

Primary responsibility for the integrity of studio video laboratories and distribution of video signals between buildings and venues on campus. This position is essential to maintaining the integrity, safety, and reliability of studios, control rooms, and digital production infrastructure. Directly supports faculty and student productions and ensures that facilities remain aligned with current and emerging media industry standards.

Position Information

Ensure Operational Continuity

• Oversee maintenance and repair of studio and field production technical facilities, studio spaces, control rooms, and related broadcast and cinema systems. Minimizing downtime during instruction and student productions.
• Perform a full range of technical support for television production facilities, including operating and maintaining multi-camera systems, audio equipment, video equipment and distribution systems.

Support Curriculum Delivery

• Provide troubleshooting and assistance during studio production classes, live productions, and instructional activities to ensure uninterrupted operations.
• Maintain the integrity of video laboratories and signal distribution pathways, including video and audio routing within buildings between campus venues, and across the university infrastructure.
• Manage acquisition, installation, configuration, and upgrading of studio classrooms, and production technologies, ensuring timely implementation and compliance with university standards.
• Independently perform technical work under general direction, using initiative, judgment and discretion in planning and supporting production and broadcast facilities, including space-planning, wiring and equipment installation.

Advance Digital Infrastructure

• Lead integration of IP-based workflows (including streaming), digital signal, management, and networked production systems to align with industry practice. Collaborate with facilities and IT Services to support infrastructure improvements related to broadcast, A/V, and media production environments.
• Maintain detailed up to date documentation and inventory of equipment, systems, and technical configurations.

Support Faculty and Student Learning

• Perform skilled repairs on technical equipment and ensure all environments comply with safety, accessibility and university operational standards
• Provide hands-on repair, preventative maintenance, and operational support for production studios, media laboratories, and related instructional spaces.
• Deliver direct laboratory assistance, ensuring equipment systems are functioning properly during classes, labs, and student productions.
• Train and support faculty in the safe, effective, and pedagogically appropriate use of production facilities, equipment and technologies.

Foster Innovation

• Assess, critique, and evaluate work in progress with laboratory environments, offering technical guidance that supports instructional outcomes.
• Plan for emerging technical needs, recommending improvements, upgrades, and future ready solutions for studio, laboratory, and instructional technologies.
• Research and recommend emerging technologies consistent with professional broadcast and digital media standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires equivalent to three years of progressively responsible experience as an audiovisual engineer, including all phases of operation and maintenance of television facilities and broadcast studios. The necessary background to perform this work is normally attained through a college degree program in a related field or a combination of technical training and experience.

Typical knowledge and skill requirements:

• Comprehensive knowledge of the practices, methods and trends in television and audio engineering, including the fields of frequency allocation, electromagnetic wave propagation, and signal strength measurements and tolerances.
• Comprehensive knowledge of federal communication rules and regulations.
• Comprehensive knowledge of digital and analog electronics theory and troubleshooting.
• Comprehensive knowledge of audio/visual systems. A working knowledge of cable, fiber and microwave networks and satellite systems including the underlying theories and principles.
• Ability to use applicable computerized systems in television production and broadcasting and webcasting, including video server technology.
• Ability to plan, layout, operate and maintain broadcasting facilities.
• Ability to interpret and apply provisions of applicable state and federal communications legislation.
• Ability to train, instruct and provide direction to student assistants.
• Ability to direct activity of other technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Electrical Engineering Computer Science or related field and/or professional certification from an accredited broadcast or audiovisual organization (e.g., Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE), AVIXA, or Dante Level 2 or higher.
• Experience in a professional studio television production environment is strongly preferred.
• Three years of progressively responsible experience in broadcast or audiovisual engineering, including hands-on involvement in the operation and maintenance of electronic media productions systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the setup, integration and operation of multi-camera video productions, lighting and audio in both studio and field environments.
• Proficiency in integrating audio/visual content streams with broadcast, cablecast, and lP based distribution systems, including equipment installation, system configuration, and documentation of engineering workflows.
• Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and perform basic arithmetic calculations as required.
• Strong trouble-shooting skills in electronic media production environments, including diagnosing and resolving technical issues including digital, analog, and networked A/V systems.
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development, including staying current with emerging technologies, equipment upgrades, evolving media formats and software tools relevant to broadcast and audio-visual engineering.

Environmental/Physical/Special

• This position serves the BECA Department, the School of Cinema and the Journalism Department.
• Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
• Must work in some areas that are not ADA compliant.
• Position requires physical labor, moderate lifting 15-44 lbs.
