Position Description

The ideal candidate will provide exceptional customer service, possess a can-do attitude, and value teamwork at all levels of the organization. Emergency Services Dispatcher III's are the advanced working/lead class in the Emergency Services Dispatcher series. Employees are assigned to work any eight- to ten-hour shift and may be required to work on weekends and holidays. Swing and Night Shift pay is an additional $1.45 to $2.30 per hour above base rate of pay depending upon assigned shift.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

- Provide lead direction and training to subordinate emergency services dispatchers.

- Receive and transmit routine and emergency calls for police, fire, and medical services.

- Investigate complaints and respond to citizen inquiries, handling complex situations.

- Advise callers on police and fire procedures when no emergency response is needed.

- Operate the Computer-Assisted Dispatch (CAD) system and related equipment.

- Transmit coded messages to police and fire personnel in the field.

- Evaluate calls and prepare detailed reports based on information received.

- Maintain effective communication and working relationships in a fast-paced environment.

- Performs related duties as required.

Three (3) vacancies currently exist in the Police Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. Should the competitive process be suspended for this recruitment, the eligibility list may be limited to three (3) months.

The Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.

Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent GED completion

AND

One (1) year of experience equivalent to that gained as an Emergency Services Dispatcher II with the City of Fresno.

Equivalent experience may be defined as:

Answering and evaluating emergency police, fire and medical service calls, preparing police and fire service calls, and operating a multi-channel Computer-Assisted-Dispatch (CAD) system console and related equipment to dispatch appropriate public safety units.

Additional Requirements

Possession of a valid California Driver's License may be required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire may be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and a current copy of their driving record.

The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a Department interview, extensive background investigation, Computer Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) and/or polygraph test, medical examination which will include testing for the presence of drugs and alcohol, and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno. Any falsification of information you provide or any failure to meet the requirements will result in disqualification from further consideration in the selection process for Emergency Services Dispatcher.

Selection Process

The examination process may consist of the following:

APPLICATION REVIEW - QUALIFYING ONLY: Applications which meet the minimum qualifications will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to the Oral Examination. Selection of the most qualified candidates will be based upon those applications demonstrating the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for evaluation.

ORAL EXAMINATION (100%) : A panel of subject matter experts will conduct job-related oral exams to evaluate a candidate's ability to provide lead direction and train personnel, deal tactfully with citizens who may have been abusive, excited, intoxicated, ill, disabled, incoherent, etc., maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees in a closed environment, operate radio communications equipment at the speed necessary to timely completion of assigned duties or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Emergency Services Dispatcher III. Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

Veteran’s Preference
